SIGNS OF FOWL POX DISEASE
- Scabs or wart-like lesions on the comb, face and feet.
- Eyelid swelling and eyes sealed shut or scabbed over.
- Lesions in the mouth interfere with feeding.
- Lesions in the trachea cause difficulty in breathing.
- Decreased egg production.
- Death of young birds.
Mortality is usually low (1 to 5 percent) and depends on the severity of the disease.
Two different forms of fowl pox can occur in chickens—classified as a “dry” (skin or cutaneous) form and a “wet” (diphtheritic) form.
Transmitted to flocks primarily through biting mosquitoes.
