Infection spreads rapidly and causes many abortions in a herd of unvaccinated cattle. Organisms are shed in the placenta, amniotic fluid, and milk.
Humans acquire the disease through direct contact with infected animals, by eating or drinking contaminated animal products or by inhaling airborne agents.
